How long have you played??
I realized recently that I’ve played WOW for about a year now. The thing that got me thinking about this a really great article about how WOW was designed.
For those of you who are new the the Blizzard Phenomenon, Rich Vogel is one of the driving forces behind WOW and many of their most successful titles. In the article, he expands on the design philosophy to make the game accessible to the casual player.
That’s how I realized that I went from hardcore to casual in July. I had to start taking future family issues into consideration. I just can’t invest the time for big instance runs. It’s why hunters and druids appeal to me. They solo so easily.
How long have you played, and have your habits changed?

It’ll be a year for me, at the end of this month. I’ve always been pretty casual, with a weekend warrior style of play — light most of the time, until for a few days I’m into it up to my ears for better than twelve hours a sitting.

I actually haven’t started playing WoW because of the danger of getting addicted and it sucking my life away from me. I’ve been sticking to playing Warcraft III, but I think I may switch over now that people are starting to realize how addictive it ‘can’ be. I hope the status of the ‘casual gamer’ isn’t brushed under the rug – if anything it seems that it is becoming the dominant position (I hope!).
