coda.pngThe cool programming freaks at Panic software have developed their own take on website development for a fraction of the price of apps like Dreamweaver. Check out Coda.

As usual the webpage for this product is beautiful. the UI looks pretty. I’ll mess with it and get you guys an update when I can.

Server side crazy coding

Monday, March 12th, 2007

Picture 1.pngLately I’ve been up to I/O ports in a server programming language called Lasso. It’s a database access language similar to php or crystal reports I think.

I’ve spent more time screwing around under the hood of servers than I would have guessed. I installed Lasso 8.5 on my local machine. Then I installed MySQL. I’m still not sure I’ve got this stuff configured. I’m learning tons about Apache settings and mods.

A few crazy pieces that I’ve setup: a multi-file upload form with a status bar, and image sizing before emailing; an ajax animated catalog; dynamic relational database system linked via arrays.

I wish I was trained as a programmer, of course that would make it all too easy. Besides, how many programmers actually started out as programmers?

I’ve recently visited the Blizzard official wow site. Their new Armory looks kind of interesting. From a web developer standpoint, it seems like they spent a ton of time on the look, but maybe missed the boat for bandwidth usage. sigh.

If you haven’t visited their site, the comic section has a couple funny additions.

According to the Armory site, there are quite a few level 70′s already. I have to wonder if they even took the time to enjoy the new work that BC has to offer.

BTW – I’m still waiting for someone to tell me what happens when you jump of the edge of outland. Anyone???

Thanks all! – Kurn

WoW on iPhone?

Wednesday, March 7th, 2007

Again, people dreaming about WOW on the iPhone. Notice that this guy realizes how a problem that would be. He’s concentrating on the processor, which I ignored before, but the gut still says ‘no way.’

WoW on iPhone?: “

iPhone World is reporting on an anonymous tip from a ‘reliable source’ that Apple’s forthcoming iPhone will run WoW:

  • The Source said, ‘watch out for the iPhone and their new video iPod when it comes to gaming. Imagine playing WOW on them using the touch screen interface. Think of the impact its going to have on the handheld game market and Apple’s revenue.’
  • He/she said He/she was told that WOW on the iPhone worked with both WiFi and EDGE (without simultaneous phone use) and full multi-tasking with 3G in the future. New iPod will utilize WiFi.

My instincts say ‘no’ on this one. I don’t know much about the iPhone’s ARM11 processor, but I’d be surprised if even the most powerful of phone CPUs could render a game like WoW playably. And even if it could, would you really want to play on a screen that size? Heck, I had enough trouble on my old laptop’s 12′. Furthermore, I believe Blizz have said that they think a keyboard and mouse are essential for playing WoW, when giving reasons for not porting the game to consoles. But enough baseless speculation. Does anybody know about that ARM11 CPU? Let me know in the comments if this is impossible or merely unlikely.

P.S. The above image isn’t evidence of WoW on iPhone, it’s just a quick Photoshop.

cool Mac apps, while we wait

Sunday, January 14th, 2007

Picture 1.pngI’m sure most of you have been dying to get your mitts on the first official (paid) expansion of WOW, due out on the 15th.

I’ve been on WOW sabbatical while I attempt to work (to pay the bills) and help raise our first child (yes, I’m a breeder now).

During a few of my waking hours, I’ve been using cocoatech’s Path Finder with great satisfaction. Version 4.6.1 is much faster and has ‘folder sets’ – a feature that I’ve been dying to have. Path Finder is all about workflow and file management.

If you’re like me (which you probably are since you’re reading this), then you have tons of files in your download folder and your WOW add ons folder. Path Finder let’s you filter a directory by what ever you type in the filter box. It also has a number of search tools to compliment Spotlight (not everyone loves Spotlight.)

Apparently I’m late to the ‘love party’ because Merlin Man has shared the love like a blogging maniac. See this too.

The other software that I’ve been fooling with is called Quicksilver. At first, it seems like an idiot savant file launcher. After some experimentation, it also provided fast searches of files and website bookmarks. This is noteworthy since, all you do is hit a hot key combo and type what you want. I suspect that with practice, it could be very handy. I’d be curious to hear what you guys have to say.

I Phone … the future of wow?

Thursday, January 11th, 2007

iPhone By now the iPhone has derailed the train of thought for many a web surfer. Heck Cisco was suing Apple over trademark infringement hours after it was announced. Now that’s success. Or at least great free press.
The iPhone promises desktop quality Internet and iPod quality media in the palm of your hand. Not bad.
If you were paying attention, you might have noticed that this sexy beast runs OS X and it supports wifi and bluetooth.

Sooo, what if you could setup a fold-out bluetooth keyboard and mouse so you could play WOW on your phone. I think the 8 Gig model could handle it. The screen would be tiny but it’s 160 dpi so it would be sharp. I don’t know what the processor speed is, but based on the keynote demo video, I’m betting it’s pretty fast.
Just an idea for the ultimate WOW freak out there. What do you think?

Kurn

Update: Steve Jobs has announced that no apps will be added to the iPhone without the Apple A-OK – so I’m guessing that my little pipe-dream is a crack-pipe-dream. sigh.

OMG: Home-made Mac Mini Portable

Friday, November 3rd, 2006

This thing gets 3 hours of battery life!? That’s damn impressive. It does not look like a great World of Warcraft platform though.

Home-made Mac Mini Portable: “

diymacmini.jpgPeter Green is too good for laptops. MacBook? Too unoriginal. He prefers a self-made Mac Mini touch-screen device that has a 3-hour battery life and its own stand. We admit, three hours is more than our PowerBook gets, so that’s kinda cool.

The only bad part is, everyone on the train thinks he’s a big dork. Well, they think the same thing about us too, even without a DIY MacMini.

MacBook Pro core 2 duo – under the radar

Wednesday, October 25th, 2006

Apple just released the new MacBook Pros with Core 2 Duo. A month after all the PC vendors and claims their machines are 39% faster than the last generation.

Since the update seems to only affect the MacBook Pro, this may finally be Apple’s effort to better differentiate it from the MacBook.

Pricing starts at $1999 (similar to the pre Core 2 Duo version) but 1 Gig of ram is standard as is 120 gig hard drive (nice). All models have double-layer SuperDrive and ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 video card.

I’ll go out on a limb here and suggest that WOW will play quite smoothly on these babies.

See for yourself.

See our store for great prices on MacBooks and WOW products.

How’s your web browsing?

Firefox 2

Contrary to what you may think, I do look for opportunities to share something more with my fellow Mac enthusiasts. As evidence of this, I discovered that release 2 of FireFox 2 is out for Mac folks. It has two features you’ll like: 1. it’s very fast 2. it looks very stable.

Sure it sounds like crazy talk, but i’ve been playing with it, and it imported my latest batch of Safari bookmarks very gracefully and everything I’ve tried (next to nothing) has run smoothly. Just go get it and tell us what you think.
