cool Mac apps, while we wait

Picture 1.pngI’m sure most of you have been dying to get your mitts on the first official (paid) expansion of WOW, due out on the 15th.

I’ve been on WOW sabbatical while I attempt to work (to pay the bills) and help raise our first child (yes, I’m a breeder now).

During a few of my waking hours, I’ve been using cocoatech’s Path Finder with great satisfaction. Version 4.6.1 is much faster and has ‘folder sets’ – a feature that I’ve been dying to have. Path Finder is all about workflow and file management.

If you’re like me (which you probably are since you’re reading this), then you have tons of files in your download folder and your WOW add ons folder. Path Finder let’s you filter a directory by what ever you type in the filter box. It also has a number of search tools to compliment Spotlight (not everyone loves Spotlight.)

Apparently I’m late to the ‘love party’ because Merlin Man has shared the love like a blogging maniac. See this too.

The other software that I’ve been fooling with is called Quicksilver. At first, it seems like an idiot savant file launcher. After some experimentation, it also provided fast searches of files and website bookmarks. This is noteworthy since, all you do is hit a hot key combo and type what you want. I suspect that with practice, it could be very handy. I’d be curious to hear what you guys have to say.

Do you play with people from other time zones? This will help

Wednesday, November 29th, 2006

Picture 1.jpgI found a very handy Dashboard Widget over at the apple site. It’s a very compact world clock that lists time for multiple time zones. This is a great tool if you plan to meet players from other time zones for a raid or battle ground.

What do you think?

OMG: Home-made Mac Mini Portable

Friday, November 3rd, 2006

This thing gets 3 hours of battery life!? That’s damn impressive. It does not look like a great World of Warcraft platform though.

Home-made Mac Mini Portable: “

diymacmini.jpgPeter Green is too good for laptops. MacBook? Too unoriginal. He prefers a self-made Mac Mini touch-screen device that has a 3-hour battery life and its own stand. We admit, three hours is more than our PowerBook gets, so that’s kinda cool.

The only bad part is, everyone on the train thinks he’s a big dork. Well, they think the same thing about us too, even without a DIY MacMini.

OnyX – it’s not Dragon…

Tuesday, October 17th, 2006

OnyX is a handy utility to clean up all the excess cache files and junk that accumulates on your hard drive. If your Mac has been running slow, this could be the cure. Best of all it’s free.

p.s it does other cool things too ;)

OnyX is a maintenance, optimization, and personalization utility for Mac OS X. It allows you to run miscellaneous tasks of system maintenance, to configure certain hidden parameters of the Finder, Dock, Safari, Dashboard, Exposé, Disk Utility… to delete cache, to remove a certain number of files and folders that may become cumbersome, to see the detailed info of your configuration, to preview the different logs and CrashReporter reports, and more.

IMPORTANT NOTE: there are different versions of OnyX for 10.2, 10.3, & 10.4 – check the download page to get the right version.

Do you fly? Maybe you should DING!

Picture 7.png

Yeah it’s hard to believe, but a major Airline (Soutwest) wants your business so bad, that they wrote an application that runs on a Mac (10.3.9 or better) that notifies you of sales on airlines.

I haven’t tried this yet, but I fly this airline all the time. This seems like it’s worth sharing.

I’m convinced there’s a use for this – for us Mac WOW folks

Sunday, October 8th, 2006

Picture 6.png

Ever since I found this program, I’ve been wondering how we could use it for WOW. I know that there are web sites with maps of Azeroth, but do that compute travel times and show best routes? Probably.

main-screenshot.jpg

So the web site for this program is: http://meander.macpaq.com/

So if a guild can find a use for Second Life, why can’t we find a use for this? Common Mac gods. What have you got?

Firefox 2

Contrary to what you may think, I do look for opportunities to share something more with my fellow Mac enthusiasts. As evidence of this, I discovered that release 2 of FireFox 2 is out for Mac folks. It has two features you’ll like: 1. it’s very fast 2. it looks very stable.

Sure it sounds like crazy talk, but i’ve been playing with it, and it imported my latest batch of Safari bookmarks very gracefully and everything I’ve tried (next to nothing) has run smoothly. Just go get it and tell us what you think.

goodies
I was looking for loot to share with you on the WOW message boards when I came across this rave about the 24″ 2.16GHz iMac.

As i started to read it, various posters got more and more into the nitty-gritty of memory use, Roseta emulation, and processing times. I found myself yawning. sorry. I realize that this site is currently the only source for Mac WOW news, and I’m trying to get you relevant info so you don’t have to spend your day trolling through boring stuff.

If you have requests or suggestions, leave a comment and I’ll do the leg work.
